Is Arizona State University the biggest Green College? They want to be

2009 July 2

ASU (Arizona State University) is seeking $158 million in funds to help expand it’s green initiatives.

Already, ASU is one of the premier US Institutions with a focus on green technology. Currently they have 14 research centers and over 1,200 employees focusing on renewable energy projects.

Currently, the University is focusing on solar projects and algae projects.

The algae lab in Mesa represents how ASU researchers are studying every angle of energy issues.

The researchers at the Laboratory for Algae Research and Biotechnology study not only fuel but also how to use algae’s byproducts as animal feed and nutritional supplements, including vitamins B, C, D and E.

Algae grow much faster than other plants used for fuel, including corn and soybeans, and can produce many more gallons of oil per acre of land.

In one of the most optimistic scenarios, researchers hope to grow algae using wastewater and the greenhouse gases from power plants, eliminating those environmental hazards and producing fuel at the same time.
