Green News: Tokyo is serious about going Green with rooftop gardens

2009 June 22

In a new article from Reuters, Tokyo, which is known as one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has taken a strong stand to promote more green space in it’s buildings. Not just for the CO2 problem, but for quality of life in general.

Just like in other areas, a lot of rooftop space is being converted into gardens. Not only does it provide some nature in a concrete jungle, but having a rooftop garden can reduce energy costs by keeping indoor temperatures lower in the warmer months.

What’s so special about Tokyo? It is a requirement for new commercial buildings built in Tokyo to cover at least 20% of available space with greenery. Certainly with a city the size and population of Tokyo you’ll need a lot more than some rooftop gardens to help offset the emissions, but at least it’s a start.
