EPA Will Allow California to Set Their Own Emissions Standards
News out of the Los Angeles Times today tells us that California will now be able to set their own emissions standards. What does this mean? It means we are one step closer to forcing the Auto Industry to producer more fuel-efficient, cleaner cars.
California’s standards were set in 2004 but barred by a Bush-backed Decision. Obama ordered the case resivited and now California is leading the way in clean air policies once again. This appears to be the precursor to Obama’s goal of increasing all new cars to have an average MPG of 35.5, a huge increase from the current 25 MPG.
Of course there is some opposition, citing the cost it may put on small businesses and consumers who will need to find a way to upgrade to keep their vehicles road ready in a down economy.
Regardless, this is a first step in creating a more logical EPA policy that puts an emphasis on the environment more than the policy-pushers agendas.
